A Delicate Topic

He noticed a commotion on the course. It was not normal to see these many people in one spot unless there was an event going on. Then he realized what was happening: people had gathered around a creature that hadn’t moved in hours. No one could understand what it was doing. He knew he had to try and help it. But this decision would put him in a precarious place. As he reached out to the animal amidst the murky pond water, his life changed in the blink of an eye. No one saw it coming, until the very last second.

A Good Day For Golf

But Craig Loving was not there by accident. In fact, he was no stranger to Lost Creek Country Club. He works as a superintendent of the golf course there. But this happy go lucky guy had no idea what was waiting for him at work one morning. Craig had dealt with a plethora of problems on his course over the years, from malfunctioning sprinklers to misplaced equipment. But nothing as bizarre as this. Craig knew commotion on the course was never a good thing, as it kept paying customers from playing in peace. But he could never have anticipated what he saw next.

An Odd Place To Perch

As Craig made his way through the crowd, he pulled one of the groundsmen aside. He inquired what the fuss was all about. The keeper informed him that there was an owl in the pond. As Craig looked on, he noticed it: a Great Horned Owl. But what was the fuss about? This bird was not endangered as far as he knew. In fact, it was one of the most well-known birds in America. They are also quite opportunistic hunters, as they’ll chase down almost anything that moves. That means they’ll never want for food. So what was all the hype about?

Understanding The Hype

Craig’s groundsman friend began to tell him more about the curious animal. Turns out, the owl had been sitting on a tree stump in the middle of the pond for hours on end. And no one had any idea why it refused to move. The owl was like a statue, refusing to fly from its chosen spot. It had not eaten, nor even spread its wings. It was not normal for a bird like that to be stationary for hours. Baffled, Craig asked how long it had been there for. And when the groundsman told him, he nearly fell over.

The groundsman noted that the bird was first seen on its perch roughly twelve hours ago. And it was noticed only because there had been a commotion in the water. It seemed as though the animal had struggled to make its way onto the stump of the pond. Yet, people were standing around watching the owl with no plan in place. This made Craig’s blood boil. How could his staff just leave the poor thing out there for that long? Something was clearly wrong -- was he the only one to realize that? So then, Craig decided to make things personal.

A Personal Choice

Craig couldn’t stand the thought of the poor owl being out there for so long. Surely, something must’ve been wrong with it. And he intended to find out just what it was, even if that wasn’t in his job description. He was no animal expert, but he knew if he didn’t do something then no one else would. Craig decided to go all-hands-on-deck. He began to scope the perimeter of the pond to see if he could spot anything dubious around the owl. But then Craig noticed something ominous. And when he took a closer look, he knew he was correct.

Precarious Positioning

The owl had managed to land itself in the middle of a trouble zone. There were muddy embankments and tangled shrubbery all the way around the post on which the owl was perched. This would make things tricky for Craig. He would need to be incredibly sure of his footing unless he wanted to end up submerged. But, whilst slipping and getting drenched would be unpleasant, there were bigger problems. The mud could suck a person’s foot into it quickly. This could cause one to be trapped. But Craig simply had to see what was wrong with the poor bird.

Taking The Plunge

Craig knew he needed to help the animal, whatever it took. So, he sought the best equipment to be able to do so safely. He donned a pair of slacks groundsmen would usually use to fish golf balls from the ponds -- a very frequent occurrence. Topped off with a pair of wellingtons and safety gloves, he waded in slowly and carefully. The experience was unpleasant, to say the least. But Craig soldiered on and soon he made it to the middle of the pond. Then, when he reached the owl, he understood why his team was so hesitant to help it.

A Hostile Welcome Party

When Craig eventually made it to the owl, he was not welcomed with open arms. Instead, the animal continuously lashed out at his advances, snapping its beak menacingly. This was to be expected, as owls are usually suspicious of humans and feel threatened when someone gets too close for comfort. But he knew something was wrong with this creature. And so, he pushed. He needed to see why the owl had not moved in hours. Tentatively, Craig placed his hand on the owl’s wing. Instead of helping the situation, this just introduced a bigger problem. And then, the owl struck.

Not A Happy Camper

As Craig attempted to inspect the bird’s wing, it suddenly snapped at him with its beak. This caused the man to jump back, scared for his own well-being. But Craig knew he had to push on. Something was wrong with the owl. And he was determined to help it. After much fuss, Craig began to speak soothingly to the bird. “He kept slamming his beak down, and kind of just saying ‘hey, I don’t like this’,” Craig shared. “But I kinda talked to it a little bit.” And when he did, he also found the thing that was holding the animal back.

Sever The Cause

Finally, Craig had found the culprit! The poor owl had gotten its wing tangled in a fishing line that had been dangling among the bushes. Since the line was transparent, no one could spot the issue from shore. Delicately, Craig worked to remove the constraint from the bird’s wing. But it was not easy, as it was wrapped several times around. As carefully as he could, Craig slowly unwound the owl from its bondage. Finally, Craig had worked all of the lines out of the owl’s feathers. But once it was free, instead of flying away, the owl did something disheartening.

Exhaustion Kicks In

The poor owl had been trapped for at least twelve hours. No one truly knows how much longer it had been tangled for before the employees first noticed it. As such, the bird was exhausted and probably also a little bit scared after such a harrowing ordeal. It just remained on its perch in the water, refusing to move. Maybe it was still in pain from the line cutting into its wings. Craig knew he had to help the animal out of its shocked state. The owl couldn’t just sit here -- otherwise, it’d starve. Craig then had an ingenious idea. But he’d need help.

Backup Arrives

Craig clambered out of the pond and went off to find the green’s groundsmen. He came back to the owl with a shovel in hand. Once again, he cautiously approached the bird, who stood there still even though it was now free. Holding the shovel end, Craig offered the handle of the spade to the owl as a perch. Graciously, the owl climbed aboard. Ever so slowly, Craig walked across the pond with shovel and owl in hand, ferrying it to shore. He then released it on a grass embankment. But the troubles were not over -- the owl still seemed paralyzed.

Final Resting Place

As Craig made his way to the bank, he slowly placed the owl down. At first, the bird was not keen on hopping off its free ride. But with a little coaxing from Craig, the owl eventually made its way onto the grass. Craig spent a few moments more with the owl, ensuring it was ok. The bird still seemed to be sluggish, and Craig feared the worst. Maybe its wing was hurt beyond repair. But Craig was not about to give up on it. And when he reached out to the bird once more, it did something no one expected.

Spread Your Wings

As Craig reached out one last time, the gracious animal spread its wings and took off. Craig watched as the owl soared away. He only hoped the creature would heal completely from the ordeal. As he watched it go, Craig was happy to have shared the experience with the creature. It certainly wasn’t your everyday round of golf for him that day. “It was definitely the first time I’ve ever done that, so it was a new experience,” he confessed. “A little intimidating, especially when its beak started snapping at me. But it was cool. It was definitely very cool.”
