For Jennifer Ignash and Chad Gray, one night would prove to be the longest of their lives. Precious cargo was abroad a flight from Iowa. The couple’s children were flying back home from a visit with their grandparents. But things did not go according to plan. And the worst part was, the parents had been kept in the dark by the airline themselves. Chad wracked his brain all night over the news he had just received for nine-year-old son, Carter.

Even though Jennifer and Chad had separated, the family was still a united front. Chad had remarried, and the kids adored his new wife. He and Jennifer made a huge effort to keep the peace for the sake of their little ones. As a whole, the family was happy. But there was one drawback. Not everyone was close by.

Chad’s parents lived relatively far away from his family. He and his ex-wife both resided in Florida. Whereas his parents stayed in Iowa. This meant the kids seldom saw their grandparents. This was trying on both sides. The children were very close to Chad’s parents. And they missed them terribly. The kids begged their dad to go visit them in the upcoming holidays. However, there was a slight complication.

When he checked his diary, Chad realized the kids’ holidays would be the busiest time of the year for him business wise. He was fully booked for various meetings and had a number of demanding deadlines he needed to adhere to. There was just no way he’d be able to go to Iowa this summer. However, a crazy thought then occurred to him. And the more he considered it, the more it became a reality.

First Flight Alone

After calling the kids’ mom, Chad and Jennifer decided the children could visit their grandparents alone. This would be their first unattended flight. Needless to say, everyone was slightly apprehensive about the decision. However, Chad accompanied his kids to the airport and sent them on their way in good faith. All he could do was pray for journey mercies for his children. Then he received this call.

Chad’s phone rang, and he anxiously answered it. He was relieved to hear the voice of his son on the other end of the call. Cater reassured his dad that they had arrived safely in Iowa. He then explained that the flight was both exciting and nervewracking. But overall, they were healthy and happy. If only this positivity carried through to their flight home.

An Unscheduled Stop

It was time to say goodbye. Carte and Etta boarded the plane as they jetted off home to Florida. However, this would soon turn out to be the flight from hell. Back home, Chad eagerly monitored his children’s flight via an app. But then he saw the plane acting bizarrely. It circled for forty-five minutes only to land in Atlanta! He had no idea what was going on, and no way to reach his children! And the night began to drag on.

Carter consoled his little sister as they climbed off the plane. He reassured her that they’d be back-up in the air in no time! All it was, was a little stop along the way home. They’d be home with daddy in no time. Carter hoped this would be true. But for a nine-year-old, the whole situation was becoming overwhelming very quickly. Back in Florida, Chad began to get incredibly anxious. And for good reason.

No Access To Phones

Unfortunately, Chad and Jennifer didn’t believe in giving their children cell phones. Chad had never regretted a decision more in his life. All he wanted to do was call Carter to find out if they were ok! The suspense was killing him. On the other side of the spectrum, Carter also desperately wished he could get a hold of his father. Especially when particularly disturbing news was broken to him.

Carter and Etta were informed that due to bad weather, the flight had been canceled. They were being moved to a nearby hotel along with four other unaccompanied children. On top of that, Carter was told he would be sharing a bed with a boy five years his senior. Another disheartening fact was that a cabin crew member of the airline would be with them in the hotel room as well. Carter and Etta were in for a rough night ahead.

At midnight, Carter managed to borrow a phone from another child in the room. He texted his father alerting him of the situation. Chad was outraged. The airline had told him nothing of this plan! But all that matters was that his children were safe. After a sleepless and hungry night, the children were pleased to return to the airport. There they received a voucher for a Mc Donald’s breakfast meal. And then, finally, they boarded the plane once more.

Chad had never been more relieved than seeing his son and daughter at the airport that day. He let hot, thick sobs stream down his face as he scooped them into his arms. But then he decided the airline had to pay. Carter told him everything about their ordeal. All they were given for dinner were Rice Krispie treats! And the fact that his son was forced to share a bed with an older boy outraged him further. Chad was determined to make a scene about this. But the airline surprised him.

In Denial

The airline blatantly denied every accusation made against them. They reported that the children had had meals provided for them and that they noticed the children making contact with their mother before leaving for the hotel. Even if Etta and Carter had contacted Jennifer, what kind of airline leaves a seven and nine-year-old in charge of communicating such a message? unhappy with the response he received, Chad took to social media.

Story Makes A Splash

Chad decided to name and shame the airline in question. And as soon as he had posted, the story began to quickly gain traction. It was covered by multiple newsrooms across America. People shared disgust in the treatment of minors and questioned the airline's credibility. But all the while, the company stood firm in their statement. Chad sought justice. But was it ever delivered?

It seems that all that happened to the company was a harsh slap on the wrist from social media backlash. No action was taken against the airline nor was compensation granted to the family. Carter suffered night terrors in the weeks post the ordeal. As a final statement, Chad and Jennifer have vowed to never fly that airline again, so long as they live. And honestly speaking, neither would we.
