Infraction

Utah County courthouse

Jose Moncayo appeared at the Utah County courthouse for a traffic ticket he had received. An infraction that had him anxious, like any of us would feel before a judge. He showed up at the time his hearing was appointed for, but when he was about to go inside a bailiff tells him something that instantly shatters him and makes him question everything.

Rampant

Utah County courthouse

Moncayo and his daughter Abi are from Orem, Utah. While waiting outside the courtroom, the little girl began running around the area making this her playground. She started going up and down the halls, investigating ‘secret’ pathways and running rampant everywhere she could. This was by far a more interesting and adventurous place than her home, as she knew all corners of such and this building was utterly new to her. Little did she know her adventure wouldn’t stop only in that area.

No One

That day, Moncayo called babysitters, his parents and anyone he could think of to take care of his 2-year-old girl. But sadly, no one could. He didn’t think much of it, surely the little girl could sit quietly inside the courtroom until he was done. Little did he know he was so, very wrong.

Unusual Requests

Being a parent to a two-year-old can be both exhausting and the greatest reward. At such age, these little ones are always curious about their surroundings and are usually very active. Moncayo knew this first hand. His little girl was one to be full of energy, and she was even known to be difficult to be put to sleep at night time. She would usually make unusual requests, but that day when Moncayo came out of the courtroom, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Abi’s unusual requests ranged from a warm glass of milk to a choreographed dance routine with her dad. A little bundle of energy that always seemed to have her batteries all charged up. So when Moncayo was in the waiting area in the courtroom, it was not surprising to see little Abi running up and down exploring. But then dad got up, he had to reel her in somehow, and nothing seemed to be working.

Swept Off

A surveillance video outside the courtroom showed footage of both Moncayo and Abi as they sat outside waiting for his turn. The little girl, in pink, is seen wandering far, so far sometimes that her dad had to get up and retrieve her. This didn’t seem to be the fun she was hoping for until one knight-in-shining-armor comes in and sweeps her off her feet.

a Father Himself

Officer Kevin Norris, a father himself sat across from the two when he kept noticing the little girl wander off. He could tell the dad was becoming agitated by the situation. Courtrooms are stressful situations and having a rumbustious 2-year-old running up and down didn’t help the situation any. But little did anybody know; this man would prove to Moncayo and everybody else that faith in humanity can indeed be restored.

Not Permitted

As his time came up, Moncayo began to enter the courtroom. As he walked in, hand in hand with his 2-year-old, a bailiff stopped him immediately and told him that children were not permitted inside. Looking from side to side, he was dumbfounded. He knew he needed help, but he would never have expected a miracle to step in.

Helping Hand

This miracle man appeared in the form of Officer Norris. A father, seeing another father in need more than willing to help him. He noticed Moncayo’ s predicament and offered to babysit the little girl. He had been watching the daughter and father all along and explained why he stepped in to help: “I’ve got kids myself. I know what it is to have rambunctious kids, and its hard to take them anywhere.” Little did Moncayo expect was the scene he came out to after he appeared in front of the judge.

Little Abi looked up at the six-foot-six officer and quickly knew she would be safe with him. Both of them, hand-in-hand, are seen walking around the courthouse looking for various activities to keep little Abi occupied. On their journey, Officer Norris knew he had to make this courthouse a fantastic experience for the toddler. But Moncayo inside the courtroom was itching to get out of there. Had he made the right decision by letting a stranger take care of his child? He needed answers. Fast.

Princess In Her Castle

In search of adventure, Officer Norris and Abi ventured around the courthouse to all departments that were permitted, and even some that weren’t; making this experience for Abi so much more incredible. She felt like a princess, and the building was her castle. They visited other deputies and even got water and treats from them! Officer Norris knew her dad would likely be out soon, so they went back to the waiting area, and he took his phone out. Little did these two know, Moncayo was about to come bursting through the door.

Devoted

The Officer is clearly devoted to his kids. He knew exactly what to put on his phone and continued to search for popular cartoons he knew his children loved. Both are seen watching Officer Norris’ cell phone. Then Moncayo, in a frantic manner, walks out. But when he sees the two tears immediately fill his eyes.

Perfect Pillow

With all the adventurous exploring and excitement, Abi had run low on energy. Her batteries needed recharging, and a six-foot-six Officer seemed like the perfect pillow to rest upon. She climbed into his lap and leaned her head against him, falling asleep. When Moncayo saw this, he was pleasantly surprised and couldn’t thank the Officer enough. He was so nervous about leaving his little girl with a stranger that the scene to which he walked out to had him impassioned.

Best Babysitter

"Kids love videos, they love movies, so we just threw some cartoons on my phone, and she was out before we knew it," Officer Norris said. He was also at the courthouse that day to provide his testimony. As an officer of the law of the Orem Police department, he went far and beyond his service of duty. “We’re not just officers who are out there to arrest people,” Officer Norris shared. “We’re out there to make our community a better place.” His actions went wide and far becoming sensational and heartwarming, this little girl will never forget her best (and biggest) babysitter ever.
