What They Found In This Dog’s System Will Horrify Any Animal Lover

How It Began

There are certain stories you hear that simultaneously pull at your heartstrings while also enraging you to the point of swearing off certain parts of the human race. This is one of those stories, but it's also a story of redemption, forgiveness, and the strength of the canine spirit. But it all starts with a dog named Suzi, who was found lying unresponsive on the sidewalk in a bad part of town. She couldn't even walk, and animal control officers who responded to the call had no idea what could be wrong.

Running The Tests

Neighbors told animal control officers that they thought that neighborhood kids had injected the dog with drugs, so they ran a test and confirmed their suspicions — if you can even believe it, both cocaine and THC were found in her system. Cocaine is capable of causing adverse reaction that involves multiple systems of the body, including the central nervous system and the behavioral system. Panting, hyperactivity, and depression can be signs of cocaine poisoning, along with serious effects like seizures leading to death. In other words, Suzi was in trouble.

Suzi was rushed to Faithful Friends Animal Society, where the veterinary team immediately hooked her up to IV fluids in an effort to flush the drugs out of her system. It was at that time that they determined she was probably only a year old. “When she first arrived, she was unable to walk, stand, eat or drink,” Kevin Rentz, marketing manager for Faithful Friends Animal Society, told "The Dodo."

"It Was Heartbreaking"

“Our vets had never seen a mistreatment dealing with narcotics like this," he continued. "It was heartbreaking.” The most heartbreaking part is that she was simply an innocent animal, who most likely didn't have a home to call her own. The neighborhood kids — who clearly weren't upstanding citizens and were involved with drugs themselves — maliciously injected her and she was forced to pay the consequences. But would she be able to pull through?

Taking Steps

They kept her hooked up to the fluids for two days and hoped that it would flush the drugs from her system as quickly as possible. Another priority was keeping her comfortable in her crate and making sure she knew she was safe — something she probably hadn't felt in a long time. “She could barely hold her head up and was barely responsive," Rentz said. "You could tell she did not know what was going on.”

Stealing Hearts

Thankfully, after a couple days of around-the-clock care, Suzi began to make strides in her recovery and won over the hearts of the vet team with her sweet personality in the process. “She stole the hearts of all the vets and techs here,” Rentz said. “Once the drugs had started leaving her system, you could see her personality perk up.” But she wasn't quite out of the woods yet. Would she make a full recovery?
