Shelter dog life isn’t easy. Their whole world is suddenly changed in a blink of an eye. The home they knew, the smells they loved, and the cuddles they craved are all taken from a dog in a heartbeat. However, life as an older shelter pup is even harder. This was the story of Muneca. Her life was incredibly trying. But when she went to live in the shelter, amazing things began to happen.

Muneca was a lovable pup. She was a dachshund by breed but teddy bear by nature. Like most dogs, she was totally obsessed with her humans. However, sadly, her humans weren't so obsessed with her anymore. But they had no idea how much their disinterest would affect Muneca’s life. For some or other reason, Muneca’s owners needed to get rid of her. So, they put Muneca up for adoption. However, there was one major issue with their plan.

Whilst respecting your elders is a way of life for people, we do not show elderly animals the same kindness. You see, Muneca was old. Very old as far as dogs are concerned. She was 18 at the time her owners decided to get rid of her. But this was a grave mistake, quite literally. Muneca’s age would affect her life in the shelter dramatically. But still, the owners opted to adopt. But their reasons for doing so were unjustifiable.

Age was not being kind to poor old Muneca. Due to her being so old, she began to develop various ailments. She wasn’t as spry as she once was. Nor did she have that lust for life. She became a lot more dependent on her owners. She craved attention constantly. And they just could not provide her with this. Then, one day, they received distressing news about Muneca.

Imagine A World With No Sight

One fateful day, something happened that would change Muneca’s life. She began to lose her sight. Since she was an older dog, this was no surprise. But she had no idea how much of an effect it would have. This and other circumstances led her owners to give her up. They didn't have it in them to put her down. So instead, they put her up for adoption. But they didn't realize what the pounds policy on older dogs was.

At least for some time, Muneca lived comfortably in the shelter. She was warm, she was fed, and she was looked after. She couldn't want for anything in her little pup world. But then, her life took a turn for the worst. The shelter could not afford to keep elderly dogs who were not adopted. This meant she was headed for one destination. The final greater beyond. But at this time, a miracle happened.

One day, shelter worker Elaine Seamans walked past Muneca. She bent down to give Muneca a scratch. As soon as Muneca felt Elaine, she bounded into her arms. When Elaine tried to put her down, she clung on fiercely, crying not to be let go. Elaine’s heart broke. She knew she could not keep Muneca. As a shelter worker, she had to remain strong and not adopt any animals. But that only meant one fate for Muneca.

Even though her days were numbered, Muneca now got the cuddles she craved. She had a warm, loving companion. This caused Elain’s heart to bleed. She felt the redemption the little dog sought in her. But she knew she just could not take her home. But, as luck would have it, something else was set up for that day. And when Elain saw John Hwang, she knew Muneca had a chance.

Just One Shot Is All It Takes

Elaine saw John Hwang as she held Muneca. John was a photographer who frequented the animal shelter. He snapped numerous shots of all of the animals who lived in the shelter. From doing this, various dogs would find forever homes. John would share the photos on his page and wait for someone to notice the animal. This gave the dogs more exposure than they would usually get. So Elaine took her chances.

Older Animals Have Limited Time

When Elaine approached John, he was skeptical. He loved all creatures but knew older dogs were harder to home. But the sight of Muneca clinging to Elaine was too much. In one instant she stole his heart. All his reservations aside, John began to snap. When the photos were complete, he posted them online. And then, they waited to see if anyone would rescue Muneca.

When John initially posted the series of Muneca, the response was dire. It looked as though there would be no redemption for this pup. but then, someone vital saw it. Kelly Smíšek, founder, and co-owner of Frosted Faces was browsing social media one day. Frosted Faces is a non-profit organization dedicated to rehoming elderly animals. When she saw Muneca, it was love at first sight! Instantly she made arrangements with the shelter. But there was a complication.

The Vet Is Needed

Before the shelter could release Muneca, she had to undergo a routine check. Whilst this was standard procedure, there was one thing which made everyone wary. Muneca’s age. Because she was so old, nobody knew how she would fare at her check-up. However, Muneca passed with flying colors! And with a full bill of health, she was now free to be released to Frosted Face. But would they be able to find her a loving home?

A Clean Bill Of Health Is Celebrated

When Muneca left the vet, she was shortly picked up by the Frosted Faces team. It didn’t take long for her to find her forever home. Within a few weeks, Amy Gann spotted Muneca. From there on out, the rest was history. Amy knew this was the pup for her. Furthermore, Amy was in the position to give Muneca the care she required. And both gals have one snappy happy photographer to thank for their union.

Social Media Saved An Animal

Thanks to John Hwang and Elaine, one little pup was saved. It just goes to show the power of social media. One man took a moving photo. This was then noticed and shared by people until it landed in the right feed. Also, thanks to Muneca’s story, Frosted Faces is gaining exposure as well. More people are now adopting elderly pups, giving a good home to all. And as for Muneca?

Muneca Makes Peace

In her last few years, Muneca will now be able to live happily ever after. After extensive home checks, Frosted Faces deemed Amy the worthy pup parent. Her home life met all conditions they had for Muneca. Furthermore, no one could love her more than Amy does. She now has her forever home and Amy has her faithful companion. This goes to show how far a single photo can go when shared by the right people.
