Trembling Kittens Meet New Owner And Refuse To Let Go

Fighting For Them

She had been doing this for many years, and her experience told her not everybody made it through. As she looked down at the three tiny creatures, she thought this might be one of those cases. Of course, that didn’t mean she was about to give up, so she decided to bring in someone who could lend a hand. It wasn’t a magic recipe, but she knew every little thing could help. And she was right.

Consummate Cat Lover

Rescuing kittens is Megan Sorbara’s life. As the President of Naples Cat Alliance in Naples, Florida, she spends most of her day working to keep the shelter and rescue up and running. She receives no pay for her work, but her love of the cats she rescues makes it all worth it. Some rescues take more sweat and tears than others, but the reward is always greater - as was the case with this litter of kittens.

Kittens In Need

One day, Megan was out getting ice cream and enjoying some time off from work. But she’s always on call at the Cat Alliance, so when one of her colleagues rang, she picked up. They had received a call from a concerned resident alerting them of a litter of kittens that might be in distress. The location was a building on Bayshore Drive that was frequented by feral cats, so Megan wasn’t surprised. She headed there right away.

Only Two Weeks Old

When she arrived, Megan couldn’t see anything at first. But then she spotted it: a grey heap of fur by the side of the building. The kittens were so tiny she almost missed them. Their mother was nowhere to be seen, so Megan approached slowly and carefully. There appeared to be two tabby kittens huddled together, about two weeks old. But as she got closer and was able to get a better look, Megan realized something wasn’t quite right.

A Third Kitten

The two kittens were wrapped up around something else that Megan didn’t recognize. But once she got close enough, she gasped. There was a third kitten sandwiched in between the first two, this one white instead of grey. The two tabbies appeared to be hugging their sibling protectively as if to safeguard it from potential harm. Megan found it curious, as usually kittens this age are more concerned about finding their mother. But she was about to discover the reason why.

Something Wrong With That Kitten

Megan picked up the kittens, put them in a crate and took them back to the shelter. Once there, she examined them a little closer and noticed there was something strange about the white kitten. She could barely walk, and when she tried to stand upright her head tilted severely to the left. That’s when Megan understood why her two tabby brothers were protecting her. Megan realized she needed the help of expert veterinary care.

And You Shall Be Coconut

Naples Cat Alliance

In honor of the ice cream she’d had that day, Megan named the white kitten Coconut and her brothers Praline and Pistachio. She took them to a veterinary clinic where they received a thorough check-up. The vet concluded Coconut may have some kind of neurological damage, possibly genetic or stemming from an injury - though it was impossible to tell at that point. But Megan wasn’t about to give up on this kitten.

Megan took the kittens back to the shelter, where she began thinking of ways to help Coconut. She knew her best chance would be to reunite her with her mother, but they weren’t having any luck on that front. They’d gone back to the site multiple times and even brought the kittens along to lure her in. But the mama cat seemed adamant on not getting trapped. Luckily, there was someone at the shelter who was more than happy to step in.

Bitsy The Kitten Freak

Megan’s dog, Bitsy, is probably unlike any dog you’ve ever seen. She loves kittens just as much as Megan - in fact, she doesn’t even get along with other dogs. She accompanies Megan on every rescue mission and likes to sit on top of the trap in the car to welcome and befriend every new cat. Megan knew that, once she met Coconut, Praline, and Pistachio, Bitsy would be more than happy to be their foster mom. It was just a matter of seeing if they’d accept her.

Instant Bond

Megan carefully placed Coconut on the bed where Bitsy was laying. At first, neither of them moved. Then, to Megan’s surprise, Coconut took a few wobbly steps, ambling up to Bitsy. And when Bitsy noticed Coconut’s friendly overture, she immediately rolled over. Megan watched in fascination as the little kitten curled up around Bitsy’s neck, nuzzling her. A loving bond instantly formed between the two.

After that, Coconut and Bitsy spent all of their time together. Feeling safe with her dog foster mom, the little kitten started moving more. "It's really good for Coconut," said Megan. "It helps her stretch and move and climb and things like that, which are good for her muscles.” But Coconut wasn’t the only one feeling Bitsy’s love.

A Loving Foster Mom To All

Even though they were still very protective of their sister, Praline and Pistachio could sense that Bitsy was being good to her, and they quickly took to her as well. "And Bitsy just loves them. She just absolutely loves them,” said Megan. And, as time went by, they were able to witness a miracle.

Making Big Strides

With the help of Bitsy’s tender love and care, Coconut’s condition seemed to be improving. “She is getting stronger and is able to hold her head up straighter than even yesterday,” said Megan. “She has a very healthy appetite and manages to roll to where she wants to go.” And it was all thanks to her doggy caretaker, who has an amazing story of her own.

Paying It Forward

Just like the kittens that she loves to cuddle with, Bitsy was a rescue as well. Two years prior, she was found wandering near a six-lane intersection. Luckily, she was rescued unharmed. But perhaps it was that brush with danger that has made her want to repay Megan by helping her rescue other animals in need. And now, she’s becoming famous.

Known Around The World

After Naples Cat Alliance wrote about the story of Coconut and her brothers on their Facebook page, the post quickly became viral. The three kittens became so famous, in fact, that Megan received word from a Japanese TV station who wanted to visit the shelter and meet them. Megan couldn’t pass up that opportunity. “It brings awareness to our organization, and who doesn’t need that,” she said.
