Harsh Reality

Emmy was tired. Her time with Jake was coming to an end, and the Australian heat took its toll. Her body was made for, born in, and bred in the United Kingdom—overcast skies, heavy rain, and cold days. She begged Jake for a quick massage, anything to reduce the ache in her neck. He succumbed to her charm; how could he ever say no to her. He lay a hand on either side of her neck and froze. What was that?

Childhood Sweethearts

Emmy and Jake met before they hit the terrible teens. After initially crossing paths during a school assembly when they were both 11-years-old, these two have had years together. They matured and developed in front of one another. They quickly formed a strong bond, built on kindness and friendship. But hormones erupted fast and strong.

Quickly Blossoming

Years went by. Both Emmy and Jake tortured themselves by watching one another fall for the wrong person. At 13, Jake joked about his fondness of Emmy, calling her his lobster. “Friends” star Pheobe shared the belief of the sea creatures falling in love and staying in a monogamous relationship for life. But these two could never admit the truth.

Adulthood

It took five years of friendship for these two to finally confess there was more between them. “You are my everything and if you still can put up with me, I will marry you one day,” Jake wrote to Emmy at the beginning of their three-year romance. It was as if the stars and moon were finally aligning, and Jake could picture a future together. But adulthood brought tough decisions.

Mature Decisions

A future together became a future apart as soon as careers began to appear. Their first love was coming to an end and it wasn’t for lack of love. Jake and Emmy made a mature decision far beyond their years—they said goodbye so they could chase their dreams. But fate can make the most head-strong skeptic question the workings of the universe.

After years of college, training and finding themselves, Emmy and Jake found their way back to one another. Emmy had promised to marry Jake when they turned 30, and he made sure to remind her. Ten years after they had said goodbye, he plucked up the courage to send her a message. But life wasn’t going to make it any easier this time around.

Going The Distance

Jake was based in Australia, saving lives as a doctor. And Emmy had dedicated her life to educating the young minds of Britain. 10,000 miles kept these two separated for weeks at a time. But they made sure to put in the effort. The internet made daily contact easy, and cheap flights made both countries accessible for whoever could get time off. Time was ticking and Jake had a plan.

Best Friends

Jake had known Emmy for over twenty years. He knew her favourite colour, her goals, her desires, her family, he noticed her sad days and her good days, and he could cure her worst days. They were best friends. Jake could picture their future. Fate had brought Emmy back into his life. And he wasn’t about to let her get away this time.

New Notes, Old Habits

Jake was determined to keep his promise. Because they had spent so many years apart, they were both agreed on a future together. Jake wanted to speed up the typical relationship timescale and make up for the years spent apart. He arranged a romantic getaway to the Philippines where he planned to propose. But before they could get there, fate threw a cruel curveball.

Reality Check

Nothing had ever scared Jake as much as Emmy. As a child, he feared she would never see him as more than a friend. As a young adult, he feared making a decision he would regret for the rest of his life. As a man, he feared ever having to spend a day without her. So, when she had taken the same trip she had always taken to visit him in Australia, Jake’s greatest fear was the ring, until he felt a lump in her neck.

Prognosis

Jake didn’t panic. Lumps and bumps were normal. But his gut said otherwise and he encouraged Emmy to get checked immediately. The day before their flight to Emmy’s dream location, test results arrived. Emmy was diagnosed with a rare thyroid cancer that had spread to her lungs, spine, and bones. Much to Jake’s beliefs, Emmy’s condition was incurable. But that didn't stop her from keeping a smile on her face.

Fear

After a mere six months of Jake’s dream coming though, the world didn’t make sense. He flew back to Britain, where he could by beside Emmy as she fought the disease. He put his grand schemes aside and proposed to Emmy one morning during a cup of tea in bed. They were married a few days later. Emmy lived by a simple slogan, “Smile, love and be kind.” These two refused to let cancer interfere with their plans.

Emmy refused to be anything but positive. “Love truly is the best drug and I have been totally smothered in it,” Emmy explained online. However, she was quickly informed the likelihood of her inability to have children. Emmy and Jake shared their plight online. "Although all of this news has been a shock and challenging at times, it has also made me realise how important and precious every day is and to enjoy and treasure every moment.” Her positivity became an overnight sensation.

Selfless

Instead of dwelling on her own misfortune, Emmy dedicated the time she had left to helping others. She continued to fundraise. She and Jake cycled from London to Copenhagen on a tandem bicycle, raising more than $195,000 for the Royal Marsden Hospital. She also completed a collection of children’s books called "Tara and Tyrone" during her hours of chemotherapy, illustrated by Jake. But positivity only has a matter of time.

Aftermath

As usual, Emmy worried about everyone besides herself. All proceeds from her books were donated. But Jake had to finish the final book when she passed away. No one could deny the impact she had on their lives. And although they should have had a lifetime of happiness, Jake considers himself lucky to have but a few solid months of selfless love. Jake has finally began dating. But he’ll never stop loving his lobster.
